Preserving History Is a Labor of Love

Historic buildings don't simply survive on their own.

Behind the beauty of The Veranda is an extraordinary amount of work required to keep a 120-year-old property standing, functioning and beautiful.

Foundations need attention. Wood needs repairing. Roofs, plumbing and electrical systems need maintaining. Historic windows, fireplaces, floors, ceilings and porches need restoration. Gardens and grounds need constant care.

And when one project is finished, there is almost always another waiting.

Preserving The Veranda isn't a renovation with a finish line.

More Than a Building

The Veranda is not simply an old house.

Built in 1906 as the Holberg Hotel, it has been part of Senoia for 120 years.

It has been a hotel, a home, an inn and a gathering place. Generations have stayed here, worked here, celebrated here and watched the town change around it.

The Veranda has survived because generation after generation believed it was worth preserving.

We believe it still is.

The Historic Porch

The sweeping porch is more than an architectural feature. It is the heart of The Veranda and one of the most recognizable parts of the property.

Every year, significant work is required to secure, repair, paint and preserve this historic structure. We estimate the ongoing cost of maintaining the porch at approximately $15,000 annually.

Original Heart-Pine Floors

Thousands of footsteps. More than a century of history.

The Veranda's original Georgia heart-pine floors are among the property's most beautiful surviving historic features. Caring for 120-year-old wood requires specialized restoration, repair and ongoing preservation.

We estimate approximately $25,000 annually is needed to properly care for and restore these historic floors throughout the property.

Significant supporters may have their name or dedication engraved on a permanent recognition plaque along The Veranda's historic hallways.

The Historic Fireplaces

The Veranda's historic fireplaces are among its most extraordinary original features, but restoring them is also one of our most complicated preservation projects.

The property has eight historic fireplaces, and currently only about half are operational. Based on estimates received, properly restoring an individual fireplace can cost approximately $10,000 to $20,000.

Our goal is to carefully restore these fireplaces while protecting their historic character.

Supporters who make a significant contribution toward the restoration of a fireplace may have their name or dedication permanently engraved into a recognition brick or plaque associated with the fireplace they helped restore.

The Historic Gardens & Grounds

The Veranda is home to what we believe is the only remaining historic garden of its kind in downtown Senoia, approximately one acre filled with mature landscaping and magnificent trees, some around a century old.

Maintaining these grounds costs approximately $20,000 annually, but our vision goes beyond maintenance.

We want to enhance the gardens with professional lighting, additional outdoor seating, fire pits and gathering areas while preserving the landscape and character that make the property so special.

Help us protect the garden that generations have enjoyed and prepare it for generations still to come.

Significant supporters may have their name or dedication permanently engraved on a beautiful garden brick or plaque incorporated into the grounds.

The Historic Barn

Some preservation projects are about maintaining history. Others are about bringing a piece of it back to life.

Behind The Veranda stands our historic barn, believed to date to the late 1800s, making it potentially older than The Veranda itself.

The barn requires substantial structural, framing and foundation work. Our vision is to carefully restore it and give it a new purpose as a beautiful outdoor event space, with the possibility of one day becoming a distinctive music and gathering venue.

It is an ambitious project, but one that could preserve an extraordinary piece of the property's history while allowing it to become part of The Veranda's future.

Major supporters may have the opportunity to receive permanent recognition at the restored barn, including project sponsorship and naming opportunities for qualifying contributions.
